    2025 Living Wage

Vibrant Communities Calgary, in collaboration with the Alberta Living Wage Network, has published a new living wage for Calgary: $26.50 per hour. This page will help you learn more about living wages in Calgary, Alberta, and Canada, and how employers can get involved to support employees and the local economy.

    Living wage at a glance

    • A living wage reflects what people need to earn to cover living costs in their community. The living wage is calculated using a consistent, transparent methodology applied across Alberta and Canada to provide a reliable picture of local affordability.
    • Calgary’s 2025 living wage of $26.50 per hour is over $2 per hour higher than the 2024 living wage. The living wage is now almost 77 per cent higher than Alberta’s minimum wage.
    • Shelter costs have stabilized. Calgarians saw a year-over-year increase of about $190 in shelter costs, compared to about $2,000 last year. This positive change can likely be attributed to higher housing supply and policies such as the City of Calgary’s Home is Here housing strategy and Alberta’s Stronger Foundation’s housing strategy.
    • Transportation, child care, and food costs are up. On average, Calgarians are paying up to 52% more for transportation, about $1,000 more on child care, and 6% more for food in 2025.
    • Government policies matter. The introduction of Alberta’s 8% personal income tax rate and the federal Canada Dental Plan are two examples of government policies that have saved Calgarians money in 2025.

    Certified Living Wage Employers

Employers that pay a living wage directly or through a combination of wages and basic needs benefits, may be eligible for living wage certification through the Alberta Living Wage Network.
Research into Alberta’s living wage network shows that after certification, living wage employers experienced cultural, reputational, and economic changes, including higher employee retention, financial savings on rehiring and retraining, and organizational growth over time. Their employees reported experiencing improved mental and physical health and increased economic well-being, including the ability to start paying back student loans and put money into savings.

    Living Wage Pilot Project

With Calgary’s living wage rising from $18.60 in 2022 to $24.45 in 2024, small businesses have faced growing pressure to balance tight margins with fair pay. In response, Be Local partnered with the Alberta Living Wage Network and Vibrant Communities Calgary in early 2025 to run a six-month pilot helping cleaning companies move toward paying a living wage. Four founder-led businesses participated, setting goals, accessing financial experts and peer support, and developing practical plans. By October 2025, one employer became a certified living wage employer, two were on track to be certified living wage employers by year end, and the fourth made strong progress toward financial sustainability, together benefiting more than 50 employees.
